About Whisky and Waves

Whisky and Waves is a small family run Scottish sailing company offering premium, small-group sailing experiences from Craobh Haven, Oban and Tobermory on the west coast of Scotland. The business combines hands-on yacht sailing, dramatic island scenery, and carefully curated whisky experiences to create relaxed, authentic adventures at sea.

Operating primarily in the Inner Hebrides, Whisky and Waves runs sailing trips to destinations such as Mull, Jura, Islay, Canna and surrounding islands, using a modern cruising yacht skippered by an experienced local sailor. Trips range from full-day sails to multi-day island-hopping journeys, depending on weather, guest preferences, and sea conditions.

A different kind of Scottish sailing experience.

Whisky and Waves is deliberately not a mass-market boat tour. Every trip is limited to small guest numbers, allowing for a slower pace, flexible itineraries, and a more personal experience. Guests are encouraged to take part in the sailing if they wish, or simply relax and enjoy the scenery.

The emphasis is on:

  • Quality over quantity

  • Unrushed, weather-led itineraries

  • Local knowledge of Scotland’s west coast waters

  • A calm, friendly onboard atmosphere

Sailing and whisky, done properly.

Whisky plays a supporting but distinctive role in the experience. Depending on the trip, this may include:

  • Whisky tastings onboard

  • Visits to island distilleries by arrangement

  • Sailing routes that naturally connect whisky regions such as Islay and Jura

Whisky and Waves focuses on context and place, pairing Scotland’s maritime landscape with its whisky heritage rather than offering a fixed or gimmicky tasting format.

Who it’s for...

Whisky and Waves is well suited to:

  • Couples and small private groups

  • International visitors looking for an authentic Scottish experience

  • Travellers seeking a quieter, more personal alternative to large tours

  • Guests with little or no sailing experience, as well as those keen to get involved

No prior sailing knowledge is required.

Based between Craobh Haven and Oban, sailing the west coast.

Oban is often described as the “Gateway to the Isles” and provides ideal access to some of Scotland’s most scenic cruising grounds. From here, Whisky and Waves explores sheltered sea lochs, open island passages, and remote anchorages that are difficult to reach by land.

Each trip is shaped by conditions on the day, ensuring safety, comfort, and the best possible experience on the water.

Your Skipper, Mike

Mike will be your handsome Scottish skipper for your trip. With years of experience sailing Scotland’s entire west coast, he knows these waters like old friends - from quiet anchorages in the Hebrides to the best pubs in Tobermory.

A qualified engineer and professional skipper, Mike mixes skill and safety with an easy-going sense of fun. Whether you’d like to learn the ropes or just sit back with a dram in hand, he’ll make sure you feel right at home on board.

Occasionally you will be treated to apprentice chef, and Mike's son Ciarán. A super-tall teenager who's calm nature will lower your blood pressure when he rustles you up something eat. Please note that Ciarán is not always available due to college commitments.
